Girl stable after triple organ transplant

December 20, 2007

OMAHA -- (UPI) -- Doctors at the University of Nebraska Medical Center performed a rare triple-organ transplant on a 6-year old girl disemboweled in a swimming pool accident.

Abigail Taylor of Edina, Minn., is in serious but stable condition following a procedure Monday to give her a new small bowel, liver and pancreas, KETV in Omaha, Neb., reported Thursday.

Dr. Alan Langas, chief of transplantation at UNMC, said Abigail is the oldest patient he's seen for this type of operation.

"Most of our patients are certainly less than 2 years of age and often less than 1 year of age," Langas said.

The suction from a wading pool drain disemboweled Abigail while she sat over the drain on June 29.
