Men under-Represented at organ-Donor registry

Compiled by Jim Gibson, Times Colonist

December 10, 2007

Women are more likely than men to register as organ donors, according to the B.C. Transplant Society.

Women account for 60 per cent of the 641,282 of those registered with the pioneer program in North America.

Why men hold back is open to speculation, transplant society spokesman Ken Donohue says. It could be because women are often the family decision-makers and less likely to have delusions of immortality.

It is a challenge to determine what motivates men to register as donors, says Donohue, who wonders "if we need to start offering cases of beer."
