PITTSBURGH U.S. Newswire -- Following is a statement from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on HHS renewing transplant contract with UNOS:

For the first time, there was real competition for the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) contract, a concept that we have long supported. But it must be emphasized that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center had no ties to the bid made by the Center for the Support of the Transplant Community, and as such, is neutral regarding the decision made by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to renew the contract with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). We respect HHS for engaging in a fair process and for making a decision it must feel is in the best interest of patients and the transplant community.

Our concern is that UNOS has thus far failed to operate the most fair and equitable patient-driven system and to comply with the provisions of the final rule that would assure much-needed reforms.

Yet we are hopeful that renewal of the contract represents a turning point whereby HHS will provide the necessary oversight, and HHS and UNOS will work together to enable fairness and progress within the transplant system, including the development of a new liver allocation policy as required by the regulation. While UNOS has begun this process -- albeit at a pace we find unacceptable -- HHS must not allow any further delays, but insist that a new, more equitable policy be presented in the most quick and timely manner possible.
